Electric Mary - Let Me Out
I have send CD to KRock please give this awesome Aussie band a go..
Electric Mary - Down To The Bone Bad Reputation
file under Hardrock / AOR
Electric Mary - Down To The Bone Rel-Jan: Electric Mary is an Australian band that have had some success down under, but who are still relatively unknown over here in Europe. And without revealing all the secrets of their new disc called 'Down To The Bone', I can already say that the band's history is more interesting than the record itself. Singer and songwriter Rusty Brown heads for New York back in 2003 in search of new musical inspiration. There he quickly bumps into Mary Campbell, the studio manager of the legendary Electric Lady Studios. Indeed, the studio than once hosted famous names such as Jimi Hendrix, Bad Company, AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. And that seems to be just what the doctor ordered for Rusty who decides to name his new band after these to. Electric Mary was born.
Back down under he quickly appoints a few of his favorite musicians to form the band and starts working on 'Down To The Bone'. And taking his inspiration into account it is clear what type of music we are listening to. This is classic rock, no more and no less. 'Down To The Bone' is the first disc of the band, although in Australia they have previously released the EP 'Definition Of Insanity'. After a few spins there is one name that keeps coming back to my mind and that is Aerosmith. A fact that is mainly caused by Rusty's voice, who shows a lot of resemblance with Steven Tyler's voice, listen to the heavy 'Right Down To The Bone'. But also musically they remind me of this band a lot, notwithstanding the fact that Aerosmith have enjoyed little more success so far. But hey, there is still plenty of time for Electric Mary, so they may catch up in the future.
Whether the success will come with 'Down To The Bone' however is doubtful. Don't get me wrong here, there is nothing wrong with this album, but it never adds anything to the the classic rock genre as well. The boys know what they are doing, show plenty of enthusiasm but somehow the tracks never make a lasting impression on me. I understand that within the classic rock frame the margins for originality are not overwhelming, but still the disc could do with a little more variation. Maybe Rusty should look for inspiration next time on his own continent. Obviously I don't expect them to turn progressive all of a sudden, but perhaps a chat with the guys from Vanishing Point may be a good idea. In the end there is nothing wrong with rock music from Australia.
